- Milk thistle helps protect liver cells from toxic chemicals and drugs and is taken by mouth for liver disorders, including liver damage caused by chemicals, alcohol and chemotherapy, as well as from death cap mushroom poisoning, jaundice, chronic inflammatory liver disease, cirrhosis of the liver and chronic hepatitis. It is also taken for loss of appetite, heartburn, gallbladder complaints, enlarged prostate, beta-thalassemia and infertility.
